In 2013, Savonor initiated its first oil palm outgrower scheme in Bubanza. Since then, the schemes have expanded in the Imbo and Kumoso regions of Burundi and include sunflower plantations as well. The projects assist smallholder farmers through inputs financing and extension services. Farmers in the projects are also guaranteed with a secure market and fair prices for their oil palm and sunflower harvests. These initiatives help generate more income for smallholder farmers, contribute in reducing import of vegetable oil while obeying strict environmental standards.
